What is the IB Extended Essay word limit?
The Extended Essay is a formal piece of academic writing with a maximum of 4,000 words. Under the guide first assessed in 2027, it is accompanied by a reflective statement of no more than 500 words on the Reflection and progress form. Confirm which guide applies to the student's session.
What are the Extended Essay criteria for first assessment 2027?
The five common criteria are Framework for the essay (6 marks), Knowledge and understanding (6), Analysis and line of argument (6), Discussion and evaluation (8), and Reflection (4), for 30 marks total. Earlier assessment sessions use a different model.
Can an Extended Essay combine two IB subjects?
Yes under the first-assessment-2027 guide, students choose either a subject-focused pathway or an interdisciplinary pathway integrating two DP subjects. The research question, methods and argument must make the selected pathway appropriate rather than simply placing two subjects side by side.
How many Extended Essay reflection sessions are required?
Three reflection sessions with the supervisor are required. The third is the concluding viva voce after completion of the essay. Under the 2027 guide, reflection is assessed through the student's statement on the RPF.

How much can an Extended Essay supervisor edit?
Under the 2027 guide, the supervisor may read and comment on one draft, but direct editing is not permitted. The submitted research, analysis, decisions and writing must remain the student's own, and the school must be able to authenticate the work.
