HL studies the three-topic global change core, three optional geographic themes, and the global interactions extension: power, places and networks; human development and diversity; and global risks and resilience. Students also complete a fieldwork investigation.

Which optional themes are available in IB Geography HL?

The seven official options are freshwater; oceans and coastal margins; extreme environments; geophysical hazards; leisure, tourism and sport; food and health; and urban environments. HL students study three options. Confirm your school's selections before building a revision plan.

How is IB Geography HL assessed?

HL Paper 1 lasts two hours 15 minutes and contributes 35%; Paper 2 lasts one hour 15 minutes and contributes 25%; Paper 3 lasts one hour and contributes 20%; the fieldwork internal assessment contributes 20%.

What is the IB Geography fieldwork internal assessment?

SL and HL students complete one written report based on a focused fieldwork question linked to a suitable syllabus topic. The investigation includes information collection, analysis, evaluation, and appropriate geographical methods and skills. Schools should confirm the current word limit and submission rules.
