Can IB students use AI for an Extended Essay or IA?
There is no blanket IB ban, but the exact task, school and teacher rules apply. AI must not replace the student's research decisions, evidence, analysis or writing. Any permitted generated material incorporated into assessed work must be acknowledged and cited as required.
Can AI help refine an EE or IA research question?
Only within school and supervisor rules, and as questioning support rather than a replacement for the student's decision. The student should test subject fit, feasibility, method, evidence availability and scope independently and keep a record of permitted assistance.
Can AI give feedback on an EE or IA draft?
A bounded review may be permitted when it identifies issues for the student to understand and revise, but generated rewrites, analysis or criterion evidence can cross the authorship boundary. Extended Essay supervisor feedback also has specific limits, so confirm external-tool use before uploading assessed work.
Does editing AI-generated writing make it a student's own work?
No. Editing generated prose does not automatically establish student authorship or demonstrate the student's thinking. If AI created the argument, analysis or wording, the student should not present it as independently produced work.
Must AI use in IB coursework be cited?
When AI-generated text, images, ideas, graphs or other output is incorporated into submitted work, the use must be made clear and referenced as required. A school may also require disclosure of permitted process support even when output is not quoted, so follow its policy.
Can AI feedback predict an official IB grade?
No. AI or StudyIB feedback is formative and may miss context, guide updates or valid alternatives. Only the authorized assessment process produces an official result; use feedback to identify questions and revision priorities, not as a guaranteed grade.
